If you’ve ever spent long hours at a desk or hunched over your phone, you may have noticed an ache creeping into your shoulders. It’s not just your imagination: shoulder pain from poor posture is a common issue we see at Eastside Sports Rehab.
Many people associate poor posture with appearance. However, the bigger issue is that it can create significant strain on your shoulders, leading to discomfort, reduced range of motion, and even chronic pain.
We recently worked with a patient who was dealing with persistent shoulder pain and found that posture was the culprit. Today, we want to share her story (not that her name has been changed) so you can see just how beneficial physical therapy can be!
Stacy’s Story: From Daily Discomfort to Lasting Relief
When Stacy first came to Eastside Sports Rehab, she was frustrated. She was an executive assistant, and her job required her to spend nearly eight hours a day at a computer. Over the past year, she had been experiencing dull, persistent pain in her right shoulder.
Stacy had tried over-the-counter pain relievers and even occasional massages, but nothing provided lasting results. She wanted to understand why the pain kept coming back—and more importantly, how to stop it for good.
As always, we kicked things off with an initial evaluation, which is when we noticed her posture. Stacy’s shoulders were rounded, and her head jutted slightly forward. These subtle changes, common in desk workers, can significantly impact shoulder function.
Poor Posture And Shoulder Pain
We explained to Stacy that poor posture changes how your muscles and joints work. Over time, these changes create imbalances and strain. Stacy’s particular issues–forward head posture and rounded shoulders–are especially linked to shoulder pain and dysfunction. Here’s why:
Increased Strain on Muscles
- Slouching overstretches the muscles in your upper back and weakens them, while simultaneously tightening the chest muscles.
Altered Shoulder Mechanics
- When the shoulders are rounded, the shoulder joint moves differently, often leading to irritation and inflammation.
Pressure on Nerves and Soft Tissue
- Poor posture can cause nerve compression, adding to the discomfort and restricting movement.
Essentially, Stacy’s body had stayed in poor alignment for long periods. As a result, her shoulders had taken a big hit, leading to pain and dysfunction.
Fortunately, we could help.
How Eastside Sports Rehab Helped Stacy Regain Comfort and Function
We took a comprehensive approach to Stacy’s care. Our goal wasn’t just to mask her symptoms but to address the underlying postural concerns to help her find lasting relief. Here’s what her treatment plan included:
Personalized Posture Training
- We educated Stacy on simple, effective ways to correct her posture throughout the day.
Targeted Exercises
- Strengthening her upper back and shoulder stabilizers helped improve her alignment.
Stretching Tight Muscles
- We focused on lengthening the chest muscles that were pulling her shoulders forward.
Ergonomic Adjustments
- Our team guided Stacy on modifying her workstation to better support proper posture.
Within a few weeks, Stacy noticed a dramatic reduction in her discomfort. More importantly, she learned how to maintain good posture to prevent future flare-ups.
Steps You Can Take to Prevent Shoulder Pain from Poor Posture
If you’re experiencing shoulder pain from poor posture, there are simple steps you can start today:
- Take frequent breaks from sitting. Every 30–60 minutes, stand up and move around. We suggest setting a timer to remind yourself!
- Practice gentle stretches for your chest and neck.
- Strengthen your upper back muscles with exercises like rows or wall slides.
- Adjust your workspace to keep your monitor at eye level and your shoulders relaxed.
