Discover Manual Therapy For Rehabilitation After Injury
Pain can affect anyone at any time – but for some, the lasting effects of that pain can disrupt daily life. No matter the cause, finding effective programs for rehabilitation after an injury to manage and alleviate your pain is an important part of recovery. The ease of getting and taking over-the-counter medication to manage pain has led to increased awareness of the side effects of long-term use. For those seeking a more natural way to alleviate pain during recovery, the manual therapy techniques used by our physical therapists offer long-lasting and effective treatment options.
There are many types and causes of pain, and one we commonly treat in our clinic is complications from overuse and injury. Read along as we review a patient’s experience with chronic pain and lasting, effective relief with manual therapy.
If you’re wondering if manual therapy can work for you, you’ve come to the right place.
Manual Therapy For Rehabilitation After Injury
A patient came to see us after he had been suffering from lower back pain for so long that he couldn’t remember when it started. He retired from his career in sales years ago but maintains a small handyman business to stay active. Taking pain medication at the end of the day had become his routine, but he had recently learned about the complications that can arise from long-term use. A friend recommended manual therapy at our clinic, so he decided to give it a try.
He told us he didn’t know what to expect from PT, so at his first appointment, we spent time answering all of his questions. We performed a detailed evaluation of his medical history and existing condition so we could get the full picture of what had led to his chronic pain. He participated in a physical assessment to determine his strength, mobility, and any limitations he was facing due to his back pain.
We determined he had experienced an overuse injury caused by years of physical labor from his handyman activities. We got to work putting together a treatment program to relieve his pain and prevent it from coming back.
The key component of his personalized treatment plan was manual therapy techniques to promote healing and improve his overall well-being.
Manual Therapy Techniques in Rehabilitation
Soft Tissue Therapy
We applied hands-on therapy techniques to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and decrease tension. Some of the techniques we used included:
Deep Tissue Work
Restore tissue mobility with firm and slow pressure targeting the inner layers of muscles and connective tissue.
Myofascial Release
Gentle, sustained pressure on connective tissues to release tight muscles.
Trigger Point Release
Target the sensitive areas of a muscle – often referred to as “knots” – to release tension.
Mobilization
Targeted, low-impact movements of joints throughout his body to increase range of motion.
Within a few sessions, he reported a significant decrease in back pain and improved sleep patterns. By sticking to our treatment plan of manual therapy appointments combined with strengthening exercises, he restored his overall mobility. He was able to return to normal activity levels, including his handyman work, with minimal to no pain.
